Wellness in the Wild

The past few years have significantly changed everyone’s mindset and lifestyle.

Whilst the pandemic may have led to the work-from-home revolution, it also highlighted the importance of prioritising mental wellbeing, taking the time away to de-stress and spending time with those that matter most.

Spending time outdoors is a simple yet effective way to spend time away from the ‘office’ and nurture both body and soul. Studies show that spending just 30 minutes a day outdoors can greatly reduce anxiety, stress, and even quicken the health recovery process.

In Guernsey, spending time outdoors is an integral part of island life. The island’s enviable work/life balance and short commute times mean more downtime in the day; to rest, recover and step back from the busy 9 to 5. Whether it’s a run on Guernsey’s cliff paths after work, an alfresco dinner with friends or a BBQ on the beach watching the sunset, islanders enjoy an outdoorsy lifestyle and truly make the most of Guernsey’s superb natural beauty, clean fresh air and peaceful environment.

Another perk of island life is the ability to spend time out on the water. Being an island in the English Channel, islanders have always had a very close connection to the sea. From lunchtime dips at La Valette Bathing Pools or a swim at one of the island’s golden sandy beaches after work, it’s easy to quickly wash away the stresses of the day and enjoy the here and now. Many islanders also own kayaks or paddleboards, allowing them to experience Guernsey’s natural beauty from the water.

Island hopping is another very special element of island life. Whilst Guernsey is the largest island in the Bailiwick, the smaller islands offer endless adventure and are a great way to enjoy the outdoors and take time out without needing a long journey or flight. Each island has its own individuality and charm. Whether it’s dinner in Herm after a day at work, a day trip with friends to Sark or a long weekend in Alderney – all offer a stress-free way to unwind and refresh.

With the recent success of the Spring Walking Festival – and its Autumn partner to look forward to – it would be amiss not to remark on the popularity of walking in Guernsey.  From coastal rambles to hidden Ruettes Tranquilles, walking is a great way to get to know the island and appreciate the varied flora and fauna. With such short commute times, walking is a popular pastime, as many  islanders swap cars for trainers and choose to walk to work, offering a refreshing way to start the day.

In a world where you can now work from anywhere, living in a place where quality of life is prioritised is increasingly desirable. Locate Guernsey is on hand to help you discover the many benefits of life in Guernsey.
