5 Key things to know when bringing your belongings to Guernsey

Setting up a home in a new place is exciting - but moving your belongings to Guernsey requires some planning.
From shipping companies and customs to cars and even plants, here are five essential things to consider when relocating your household to the island.
1. Choosing a removal company
If you're bringing the contents of your home to Guernsey, hiring a professional removal firm is highly recommended. Local Guernsey-based shippers are familiar with the island’s narrow roads, customs procedures, and VAT exemptions. They often partner with UK-based networks to streamline the process.

2. Pets
Bringing a pet? The rules vary depending on whether you're moving from the UK or internationally. You'll need to consider transport options, veterinary registration, microchipping, and dog tax.

3. Importing your car
If you're importing your car as part of your household move, you may not need to pay duty, but you must:
- Re-register your vehicle within two weeks of arrival.
- Pay a one-off registration fee, including an emissions surcharge.

4. Bringing plants
To protect Guernsey’s environment, there are strict controls on importing plants:
- From the UK: No restrictions for personal relocations
- From the EU or elsewhere: Significant restrictions apply post-Brexit

5. Importing alcohol
If you’re bringing an alcohol collection:
- Duty is payable on amounts above your duty-free allowance
- You can use a removal company or transport it yourself
- A full inventory must be submitted to Customs & Excise, and the alcohol will be held until duty is paid
