Healthcare in Guernsey: A guide for new residents

When relocating, few things are more important than knowing your family’s health is in good hands.

Fortunately, Guernsey offers a high-quality healthcare system, giving you peace of mind and helping you enjoy a healthier, more secure life on the island.

Whether you're moving for work or lifestyle here’s what you need to know about healthcare in Guernsey.

1. Guernsey's healthcare system is not part of the NHS

While Guernsey is not part of the UK’s NHS, it operates an independent healthcare system that follows the UK's best practices across its network of medical centres and the Princess Elizabeth Hospital (PEH).

  • GP appointments are readily available
  • Specialist care is delivered by the Medical Specialist Group (MSG)
  • Healthcare is partly funded through an income-related contributions scheme managed by the Committee for Employment & Social Security

2. Primary care in Guernsey

Primary care services in Guernsey include:

  • GP visits
  • A&E services
  • Ambulance use
  • Dental care
  • Physiotherapy

These services are delivered privately. Residents receive a States grant toward GP consultations, with the remaining cost paid by the patient or covered by private medical insurance.

This system means that islanders can easily make appointments with their doctors and that the local A&E department is efficient.

3. Secondary care & Specialist treatment

Secondary care is provided by the Medical Specialist Group, a private practice of consultants. When referred by a GP or consultant, the States of Guernsey covers the cost of treatment and hospitalisation, including care delivered in the UK if necessary.

  • Private patient care is also available
  • The Victoria Wing at PEH offers private in-patient treatment

4. Pharmacies & Prescriptions

Guernsey has 15 pharmacies across the island, making it easy to access both over-the-counter and prescription medications.

  • Prescription charges are capped at £4.90 per item
  • Some residents are exempt from charges
  • Pharmacy opening hours vary - check the Guernsey Pharmacy Rota for Sunday and bank holiday availability

5. Healthcare Insurance in Guernsey

While health insurance is not mandatory in Guernsey, many residents choose to take out:

  • Top-up insurance to cover Primary Care costs
  • Full private medical insurance for broader coverage

The Locate Guernsey team can help you explore your options and connect you with local providers.
