Last Saturday, on the 18th March, I was lucky enough to take part in the Ideas Hackathon at Guernsey’s Digital Greenhouse.

VisitGuernsey in partnership with Hewlett Packard Enterprise Services (HPES) conceived and moderated the event which focused around how to get the best value for Guernsey from the 130,000 cruise passengers that visit our island’s lovely shores each summer.

One of the most interesting parts of the event was testing the HPES Open Innovation Platform which provides a framework for innovation, channelling great ideas and challenging entrepreneurs to think of the key details around the operations of their innovative thinking.

Following an introduction by Peter Amory of Visit Guernsey and Marc Hollyoak of HPE we were assigned teams and started work.

I worked in a team with local company: My Ibiza. It was really interesting to work alongside a team who had built a business focused around promotion and eCommerce, to see their thinking process and ability to see the business opportunities in any situation.

We came up with the idea of a central website platform which could be utilised by all visitors to Guernsey which would be the one central place for information and allow for booking at the click of a button thus marrying up visitors with local businesses, all the while using a digital platform.

It was a fun, if gruelling, 13 hours and at the end of it we presented to judges from across public and private sectors who had some tough questions.

All the teams had some really interesting ideas, particularly the team of A-Level students from the Guernsey Grammar School.

Ultimately victory went to the Blix-TPA team.

All in all, it was a rewarding experience that showcased the high levels of creativity and skills in Guernsey across various ages and sectors. We absolutely will see more of these in future and I for one will be first in line to learn and be involved.
