1st November 2016 saw the first, hopefully annual, FinVention event at St James Hall.
FinVention 2016, supported by the States of Guernsey, aimed to bring FinTech, Innovation, Digital Entrepreneurs, Invention and Business Diversity together to celebrate the “best of breed” in the world of innovative technological products and services in the FinTech, digital and startup sectors.
Using a fast paced format whereby presenters had no more than seven minutes to present their product or service to sponsors, delegates and potential investors, a wide array of products were on show (Full list HERE)
Some of the highlights included:
- Tagteam – interesting, and very necessary, crowd control idea by local entrepreneur Jay Alymer
- Wealthify – Online investment platform providing various investment solutions to all consumers
- Digital Fine Print – Smart insurance product which links with social media to auto-fill forms
Giles Andrews OBE, Co-Founder and current Executive Chairman of Social Lending online business Zopa, and non-executive Chairman of Bethnal Green Ventures, delivered an interesting keynote speech covering off the history of Zopa to Guernsey’s opportunities in the FinTech and RegTech sectors, as well as giving his insight on the FinTech sector as a whole:
“FinTech is not about new technology… it’s about new applications of existing technology”
Teams from the Guernsey Grammar School, Ladies College and Elizabeth College also presented their innovative ideas. It was great to see young people taking their first steps into the start-up world, and impressive to see them present comfortably on their ideas.
