Settling In Series - Why Guernsey?

This time of year is a busy time for relocations to Guernsey.

Some might be looking to leave the UK ahead of the start of the new tax year, whilst others may have had time to reflect over the festive period and are looking for a change for themselves and their family.

Whatever the initial motivation, Guernsey can offer a safe, hospitable and beautiful environment in which to make a home. In this article, Lily Prus, Relationship Manager at Locate Guernsey, shares five reasons why Guernsey is the ideal destination for a relocation.

1. Proximity to the UK –Whilst geographically closer to France, Guernsey is English-speaking and has the same time zone as the UK. At just 40-minute flying time from London Gatwick and frequent flights to many UK Hubs, travelling back and forth to the UK for work or pleasure is very straightforward.

2. Enviable work/life balance – Guernsey residents live life to the full, they work hard but make time to relax and have fun. Forget long train journeys or hours spent on the motorway, at just 25 square miles, the average commute time in Guernsey is just 20 minutes. Residents make the most of the extra leisure time enjoying the island’s outdoorsy lifestyle, experiencing its excellent restaurants or trying one of the many sports or hobby groups.

3. Straightforward tax system – As an independent, self-governing jurisdiction, Guernsey has developed its own straightforward system of taxation. Income tax is levied at a flat rate of 20% with attractive tax caps available, and there are no capital gains or inheritance taxes. Corporation tax for most businesses is 0%, although some will pay 10% or 20%.

4. Safe and stable –With a community-driven population and low crime rates, Guernsey provides the ideal destination to raise a family. With a world-class financial, professional and legal services centre, those relocating to the island with businesses also have complete peace of mind.

5. Good for the whole family – The island offers both high-quality education and healthcare systems. Islanders enjoy clean fresh air and a stunning natural environment. From family walks along the beach to morning cliff runs, and weekends spent island hopping or exploring the island's coves, the whole family will quickly fall in love with all that Guernsey offers.

Could Guernsey be the ideal location for you and your family? Relocation to Guernsey can be very straightforward, due to the island's two-tier property market. Whilst the Local Market is reserved for those with a familial connection to the island or those holding Employment Permits, the Open Market provides a straightforward route to residency. Holders of UK/BNO passports or with Right of Abode in the UK can simply come to Guernsey and buy or rent an Open Market home.  This allows them to live in Guernsey indefinitely if they wish to, and they can work or set up a business, or simply live off savings and investments.  Visa routes are also available.
